| Zucchini blossoms bursting forth! so excited to use them for zucchini bread and more! |
Just six weeks ago my garden was a mess! I completely ignored it through the Fall and Winter seasons. I was well into spring, and almost to summer before I even walked around the corner to look at that area of my yard. My garden is like a dust bunny~~ you have to look to find it. It on the far side of the yard. It was originally used as a dog run, but since one of our dogs has the skills of Houdini and continued to break out, not to mention the fact that they cried or barked, it seemed like an area that went unused. Since it had a little picket fence, I could now use it as a garden and keep the dogs out!! Well, the rains caused dormant grass to flourish. When I finally took a peek mid-March I was shocked to see that the grass was about 4' high. I got my husband to weed whack the heck out of it and began to drench the area with weed killer. After that, I finally got in there, cleaned out the one bed, and began to think about adding another. The little garden is in full bloom, bulging with the beginning of tiny peppers, tomatoes, not to mention little squashes of all kinds! I just added pumpkins this week- the fairytale kind! I thought they'd come in handy around fall time for photography. We'll see how that goes:) I wanted my garden to be cute. I grabbed an old wicker love seat that was being thrown out by someone, added a few lanterns, and it's on its way to being a place that I can enjoy quiet time.
I love birdhouses of all shapes and kinds. I've purchased them as decorations and keep finding that the birds actually use them. This is my latest addition. We'll see if anyone moves in!
| I love having flowers at the entrance of my garden. These Cosmos need very little water and grow like crazy! |
Possibly a new tenant??
My little suburban garden is coming along quite nicely. I had a slightly late start. Last year I decided to change to raised beds. I've had a few friends that do this and their gardens grow much more quickly and abundantly than others. It was definitely more costly as I had to by wood for the planter and a LOT of potting soil. Well, I can tell you that last year was by far the biggest crop I've ever had!! Not only did I get a lot more food, but it grew much quicker and the vegetables were much larger.
This year I decided to double the size of my garden. I wasn't happy about the prospect of putting in more footings for the wood, cutting it, and building it. I'm sure my son--who helped me build the first one would agree! One day I was at Big Lots and discovered they carried pre-built raised beds! Wow! What a brilliant concept. Although they are not as tall as my previous garden I bought one and its working out well.
This year I've planted the following: five kinds of tomatoes, four kinds of peppers, three kinds of squash-zucchini, patty pan, and yellow, one cucumber, string beans, eggplant, and fingerling potatoes. I also started some berry bushes, although I don't expect fruit until next year. Two blueberry plants, one raspberry, and a thornless blackberry. I'm planning to add grapes and an arbor in the future. I love "shopping" for food in my backyard, knowing it's not full of pesticides. Pictures to follow...
